Foundations of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)

Anmeldung: Anmeldung nicht möglich - Anmeldefrist beachten

Inhalt

Abstract:

The online seminar "Foundations of CLIL - Content and Language Integrated Learning" is an English module for the subject-didactical training in the field of anglistics/American studies. In addition, it is also used for additional and further teacher training.
It imparts basic competences in the field of didactics of bilingual subject instruction, known within expert discussions as the acronym CLIL.
The training within the online seminar concerning the didactics of foreign language teaching is also a meta-didactical one: the various production- and competency-orientated as well as diverse task formats are at the same time exemplary for methods which are ideally used in CLIL teaching. This also applies to the exemplary test forms comprising open and closed tasks which merge into a comprehensible evaluation.
The study conditions are transparent due to the 10 clearly structured units. The corresponding task cards teach students to be flexible within the setting of time standards and deadlines, thanks to their open workshop character. Because of collaborative course elements, students will have access to a growing pool of materials which also provides a foundation for an individual, reflected media collection for independent teaching in the course of internships, traineeships or daily "teacher life."

Detaillierter Inhalt:

The seminar offers first steps into the CLIL subject matter for students in a teacher training program for elementary school, vocational school, secondary modern school, grammar school, vocational college and for students in the CLIL masters program. Furthermore, it offers first steps to additional and further training programs for teachers of all types of schools, including adult education.
The instructors will consistently guide and supervize the students (e.g. in blogs, forums, social networks, via skype etc.), correct and evaluate their course performance, and give individual feedback through monitoring and coaching.

The seminar aims at a competency-oriented acquisition of CLIL-specific teaching skills and qualifications. These are mainly:
- being familiar with CLIL didactics and methods
- the ability to analyze, develop and evaluate specific contents and topics of one school subject in the foreign language
- the ability to deduce and analyze the contents of the school subjects within the stress ratio of varying cultures and languages.

The seminar contains a basal spectrum of topics, some of which are:
- knowledge about concepts of multilingualism
- knowledge about current research and method development of CLIL approaches in preschools, elementary schools and in secondary schools
- deducing central areas of bilingual subject instruction such as didactical/methodical teaching concepts and their critical analysis as well as important principles of the approach to learning
- knowledge of the acquisition and of instructional training of subject-specific competences (subject-specific literacies)
- reflecting on the role of the language
- analyzing and critically questioning of teaching and learning material involving new forms of media
- concepts of intercultural, multi-perspective learning with regard to learning a foreign language and learning a school subject
- forms of integrated assessment of language and content, e.g. portfolio, standardized language and subject tests etc.
- building of capacities for a theory-based approch to mistakes (feedback, timing, type and extent of correction)
- developing task-oriented materials

The exam requirements consist of:
- regular and active participation including course-associated performance (portfolio)
- and an academic assessment with a minimum passing grade requirement of "adequate" (written exam)
